Roller Shutter Not Opening? Here’s What To Do

Roller Shutter Not Opening? Here’s What to Check First

If your roller shutter has suddenly stopped opening, it can be frustrating—and potentially a major disruption to your business. Whether it’s your shopfront, warehouse, or garage shutter, a jammed or unresponsive shutter is something that needs to be sorted quickly.

Before you call out a professional, there are a few common issues you can check yourself. Here’s a quick guide to help you troubleshoot a roller shutter that won’t open, written specifically for UK business and property owners.

🔌 Check the Power Supply (For Electric Shutters)

It might sound obvious, but power outages or loose cables are one of the most common causes of electric roller shutters not opening.

  • Has there been a power cut in your area?

  • Is the mains switch turned on?

  • Are there any blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers in your consumer unit?

Make sure the power supply to your shutter motor is stable. If you’re not confident dealing with electrics, it’s always best to call a qualified engineer.

🧰 2. Inspect the Control Switch or Remote

If you’re using a key switch, wall switch, or remote control, check to see if it’s working properly.

  • Try using a spare remote if you have one.

  • If it’s a key switch, make sure the key is turning freely and hasn’t worn down.

  • Some systems use batteries—are they still good?

Wiring faults inside the control unit or remote receiver may also be the issue, which would require professional repair.

🔒 3. Look for Manual Locking Mechanisms

Many roller shutters in the UK come with manual locks or bullet locks for added security. These need to be released before you operate the shutter.

If they’re still engaged, your shutter won’t move at all—and forcing it could cause serious damage.

⚙️ 4. Check for Obstructions or Debris

Over time, dirt, stones, or other debris can build up in the tracks and cause the shutter to jam.

  • Inspect the side guides and bottom rail.

  • Clear out any visible blockages.

  • Check for signs of rust or corrosion, particularly in older shutters.

If the shutter is only partially opening, this could be the cause.

🔄 5. Manual Override (Electric Shutters Only)

Most electric roller shutters in the UK are fitted with a manual override—typically a crank handle system or chain hoist—so they can be opened in case of a power failure.

Refer to your manufacturer’s instructions if you’re unsure how to operate this safely.

⚠️ Important: If the override system feels jammed or the shutter still won’t budge, don’t force it. You could cause further damage or risk injury.

🛠️ 6. Motor or Spring Failure

If everything else checks out, it could be a sign of:

  • A burnt-out motor (for electric shutters)

  • Broken internal springs (for manual shutters)

  • Faulty limit settings (which prevent the shutter from moving fully up or down)

These are technical issues that require a professional roller shutter engineer to diagnose and repair safely.
